Math is part of your child’s everyday life. They use it when they count their toys, share snacks, tell time, compare prices, or figure out how many minutes are left before bedtime. But even though math is all around us, some children find it challenging.

Maybe your child gets frustrated with math homework. Maybe they understand a skill one day and forget it the next. Or perhaps they simply say, “I’m not good at math.”

The good news is that struggling with math does not mean your child cannot improve. With regular practice and the right approach, children can build the math skills they need. 

Master the basics

Before children can tackle more difficult math problems, they need a strong foundation.

For K–5 students, this may include counting, number sense, shapes, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and other basic skills. If one of these building blocks is missing, newer concepts may feel much harder.

Start by finding out what your child already knows.

If your child is learning addition, for example, practice with small numbers first. You can use blocks, coins, toys, or even pieces of fruit to make the activity more hands-on. Try asking:

  • “How many blocks do we have?”
  • “What happens if we add two more?”
  • “Can you show me another way to find the answer?”

Keep it simple. The goal is to help your child feel comfortable with numbers.

Focus on understanding, not memorizing

Children need to understand the “why” behind math, not just memorize the steps. One effective tip is to explain math in simple words. Try breaking down the concepts into small, easy-to-understand steps and relate them to things your child already knows.

For example, if you’re teaching addition, say something like, “If you have 2 apples and I give you 3 more, how many apples do you have now?” This helps them connect the numbers to something they can see and touch.

Avoid using complicated terms. Instead of saying “subtraction,” you can say “taking away” or “removing.” The key is to keep your explanations simple. 

Practice regularly

Do math activities often, even for just a few minutes each day. This helps children strengthen their skills. The more they practice, the more comfortable they’ll become with different math concepts.

Aim for about 10-15 minutes of focused practice, which can be broken into short, enjoyable sessions throughout the week. Keep in mind that short, frequent sessions are often more effective than long, occasional ones.

Give your child small challenges

Help them push their limits by giving them math problems that are slightly harder than what they’re used to, without making it too frustrating. It would be best to start with problems they can solve. Slowly increase the difficulty.

For example, once they’re comfortable with single-digit addition, introduce double-digit addition or word problems. 

Another great strategy is to turn everyday situations into math challenges. Everyday activities are great for this.

Here are some examples: 

  • At the grocery store, ask: “An apple costs $2 and a banana costs $1. How much would they cost together?”
  • When getting ready to leave: “We need to leave in 30 minutes. What time will that be?”
  • While cooking: “We need 3 eggs for the recipe, but we have 1 egg. How many more eggs do we need?”

These small challenges help children see that math is useful outside of school, too.

Identify learning gaps and work on them

Learning gaps in math happen when a child has trouble understanding important math skills or concepts, usually because they missed lessons or didn’t fully understand them. 

The reality is that some children might need more time to understand a concept, while others move on quickly. 

Common learning gaps include number sense, basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division), fractions, geometry, and word problems. 

Begin by finding out exactly what your child is struggling with. Is it counting, addition, subtraction, or something else? Knowing the problem helps you focus on what needs improvement.

Explore a variety of math resources

Since every child learns differently, we recommend offering a mix of resources to keep things interesting. Doing this also address their specific needs. 

Choose resources that match your child’s interests. If they enjoy playing games, start with math board games or apps. If they love stories, look for math-related books or math movies that explain concepts through fun narratives!

If needed, consider additional help through tutoring, either in person or online. Peer tutoring, where older children or classmates help explain things, can also be helpful. 

Encourage them to ask questions

When children are encouraged to ask and answer questions, they develop critical thinking skills. They learn more actively. 

Show your child that it’s okay to ask questions. As you work through math problems together, ask questions like, “What does this number mean?” or “Can you think of a different way to solve this?”

Teachers, on the other hand, need to make sure every student feels comfortable asking questions without fear of being judged or embarrassed. Another strategy is to have students work together in pairs or small groups. Here, they get to ask each other questions and explain their reasoning.

Join math study groups

Math study groups offer a great way for K5 students to enhance their learning. In a study group, children can help each other when they feel stuck.

Effective study groups include fun games, challenges, or competitions. These can make learning more engaging. A little friendly competition can motivate children to do their best. 

Reach out to your child’s teacher to ask if there are any study groups available. If in-person groups aren’t an option, look for online math study groups or virtual tutoring sessions. 

Many educational websites offer interactive group sessions that children can join from home.

Be sure to praise your child’s efforts in joining the group and encourage them to keep trying, even if they feel nervous at first.

Consider additional help from experienced math tutors

Sometimes, even with practice and study groups, a child might need extra support to fully grasp certain math concepts. This is where an experienced math tutor can make a big difference.

A tutor can give them one-on-one support by focusing on what they need most and working at their own pace, without the distractions of a busy classroom. 

Moreover, tutors can introduce new strategies and learning techniques that may be different from what is taught in the classroom. This is good because it gives your child new ways to understand math!

Getting better at math takes time. Your child may not understand a new concept right away. They may make mistakes or even get frustrated sometimes.

What matters is helping your child keep going. Celebrate their effort, not just their correct answers. Remind them that every experience is an opportunity to learn. Most importantly, try to make math part of everyday life!
